Sum..sum…summertime!

Ahh, nothing like a hot, humid, South Florida rain to make one keenly aware that summer is here! Summertime poses it’s own unique dressing challenges for parents. You want to have something special for your child that will add interest to the image yet not detract from their own beauty and most important of all you want the child to be cool and comfortable in the Florida heat. Sweaty, hot children do not make happy smiling portraits.

Important things to remember as we make our way through the summer months:

♥ Opt for a session in a shady location. There are many beautiful parks at your disposable but only a select few area beaches offer shade.

♥ Make a morning of it! The best time of day for a location session is before 10:00 am, the earlier the better! Avoid late afternoon sessions outside, there is a good chance our afternoon showers will cause a rescheduled session or a gray sky.

♥ Take a break from the ordinary! Sure, we can capture those classic images with the precious clothes and the sweet smiles - but how about planning something totally fun and unexpected for the second half of the session?! Ice cream cones? Squirt guns? Sprinklers and colorful rainboots? The possibilities are endless!

♥ Scout out airy, light-weight clothing options. Gymboree has a fabulous summer line out right now and they are famous for their coordinating sibling and parent clothing options. I’ve included a small sampling below, you can click on the photo to enlarge the image.

Oooo fliggity…

Doesn’t that just sound fun?! A few days back I received an email for a new boutique clothing store for children. Always on the hunt for something new and creative I read further…”Clothing Inspired by a Child’s Imagination” hmmm, sounds interesting. As I came to the end of the email I realized this store was the brainchild of one of my own clients, how exciting!! A wonderfully talented and fun mommy & daddy with two gorgeous girls whom I’ve had the pleasure of photographing a few times now. Their site caters to the imagination of children, giving them fun, colorful, clothing that is sure to bring a smile to their face (& yours!) Grab your superhero cape and fly on over to fliggity for a colorful treat! Just in case you forgot your flying cape at home, clicking the image below will take ya there too! ;)

“What do you recommend for clothing?” I’d estimate about 98% of my clients ask this very same question. And ya know what? I’m glad they do! Your portraits are important to you. You want to cherish them for a lifetime. In ten years they will not only remind you of what Billy looked like at 3 years old with his adorable little dimples, but they will also reflect the generation, the era, and your family’s unique personality.

The emotional impact of your images is directly related to the clothing you pick which is why I often suggest having several choices on hand for your session. This enables me to help guide you if you’re unsure of your decision. It also enables you to have more variety, and subsequently, more personality in your session images.

When the subject of the session is a newborn, or an only child, it’s not quite so complicated to pick a few timeless pieces for the session. The difficult part comes into play when you are attempting to coordinate siblings or the entire family. The classic items are always good to have on hand; khakis, blue jeans, white linen. These choices tend to blend into the scene and allow the subject of the portraits to shine above all.

If you’re feeling adventurous, and interested in stepping away from the ordinary, you may find it more challenging to coordinate the group but with a little persistence the results will be worth the extra effort. It’s no secret, I love to shop. My own daughter has been known to giggle and shout “Chhhhharge It!” in her best Wilma Flintstone voice while standing in the checkout line.

With that being said, I thought I would spend a little time finding some lovely coordinating pieces for my clients and let you know where you can purchase them prior to your session, if you so desire. The internet is an amazing tool. These suggestions are simply the tip of the iceberg. Perhaps they will provide a spark and help you find that perfect outfit for your special day.

The following outfits are currently available online at Gymboree, The Gap, Old Navy, and/or The Children’s Place

And some final thoughts before I go…

Don’t under estimate the importance of foundation garments, from fun
and fashionable tights for girls to supportive pieces for Mom. My goal
is to catch the moment as it happens, your goal is to look stunning in
your portraits. This is especially important if your session involves a
child that will
need to be carried, picked up, or chased down the coast. To ensure you
are happy with all angles captured, wear clothing that
will allow you to keep covered that which you would like to remain
covered.

If by some chance, you still find yourself stumped you are always
welcomed to call me for a consultation prior to your session. Just
remember, you want to look pulled together and finished, not overdone.
This applies to clothing, accessories, and make up.
